Folic Acid - 240 (4x60) Tablets

What is Folic Acid Supplement and how does it work?

Folic Acid is also called: Folacin, Folate, Vitamin B9. Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin that occurs naturally in food. Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate that is found in supplements. Folate gets its name from the Latin word "folium" for leaf. A key observation of researcher Lucy Wills nearly 70 years ago led to the identification of folate as the nutrient needed to prevent the anemia of pregnancy. Dr. Wills demonstrated that the anemia could be corrected by a yeast extract. Folate was identified as the corrective substance in yeast extract in the late 1930s, and was extracted from spinach leaves in 1941.

Folate helps produce and maintain new cells . This is especially important during periods of rapid cell division and growth such as infancy and pregnancy. Folate is needed to make DNA and RNA, the building blocks of cells. It also helps prevent changes to DNA that may lead to cancer. Both adults and children need folate to make normal red blood cells and prevent anemia. Folate is also essential for the metabolism of homocysteine, and helps maintain normal levels of this amino acid.

Folic Acid is a B-complex vitamin needed by the body to manufacture red blood cells. It helps the body make healthy new cells. A deficiency of this vitamin causes certain types of anemia (low red blood cell count).

If a woman has enough folic acid in her body before and during pregnancy, it can help prevent major birth defects of the babyï¾’s brain and spine.  Women need 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid every day. Folic acid is very important because it can help prevent some major birth defects of the baby's brain and spine (anencephaly and spina bifida).

Research has shown that taking folic acid before getting pregnant and in early pregnancy lowers the risk of having a baby with certain birth defects. This research finding led to the advice that all women who can get pregnant should take 400 micrograms of folic acid daily.  In order to learn more, CDC continues to conduct folic acid research.

For folic acid to help prevent some major birth defects, a woman needs to start taking it at least one month before she becomes pregnant and while she is pregnant.

Folic acid may cause side effects. If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
  • skin rash
  • itching
  • redness
  • difficulty breathing
